In west central Alberta, shortly after noon yesterday, a multi-vehicle crash involving a tractor trailer unit with a load of dynamite closed Highway 40, about 50 kilometers south of Grande Cache. The RCMP believes the driver of a southbound pickup may have caught the shoulder of the highway, lost control of his vehicle, crossed the centre line and slammed into the northbound semi.Emergency crews used the jaws-of-life to extricate the driver and lone occupant of the pickup, but he did not survive the crash.- Advertisement -The driver of the semi was not injured, nor was the driver of another southbound pickup, who avoided the collision by driving into the ditch.Police say, given the nature of the crash, the inert explosive chemical being carried by the semi did not pose an imminent risk but, as a precationary measure they evacuated the area and set up a wide safety perimeter around the crash site. The highway was closed for about eight hours while the load was transferred to another truck and the crash site cleared of debris.Advertisement Police are still withholding the name of the dead pick-up driver and are also taking witness information calls at the Grand Cache detachment number…1-780-827-3344. —

Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact For Boldin, next Sunday’s appearance in the NFC title game against the Seattle Seahawks will mark his third in a conference championship game. In his two prior appearances, Boldin recorded nine catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns.Boldin’s former teammate, cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, also had a hand in his team’s divisional round victory, as he recorded four solo tackles and a game-high three pass deflections in the Denver Broncos’ 24-17 win over the San Diego Chargers. The former Cardinals first-round pick, who was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles along with a second-round pick for Kevin Kolb back in July 2011, has three interceptions on the year to go along with 31 tackles. Rodgers-Cromartie and the Broncos will host the New England Patriots next Sunday for the right to represent the AFC in Super Bowl XLVIII.Former Arizona offensive lineman Adam Snyder (49ers), linebacker O’Brien Schofield (Seahawks) and linebacker Paris Lenon (Broncos) will also be participants in the conference championship games.
