Isiah Thomas Wants People to Keep Open Mind About His New Job

first_imgGREENBURGH, N.Y. — Isiah Thomas knew there would be questions when it was announced two weeks ago that he would be the new president of the New York Liberty. Thomas hopes that people will just keep an open mind.“We were concerned, and we talked about it,” he said in a news conference Thursday at the WNBA team’s training camp. “At the end of the day you can only live your truth.”Thomas had an unsuccessful stint as coach and president of the New York Knicks from December 2003 to April 2008. After being fired as coach, he remained with the team in an unspecified role, even after a lawsuit brought by former team employee Anucha Browne Sanders cost Madison Square Garden $11.5 million in a settlement. Sanders alleged she was sexually harassed by Thomas, who was not found personally liable.“I’ve always maintained my innocence, moved on from that. Our organization has moved on from that,” Thomas said. “I’m proud of the way I lived my life.”Madison Square Garden Chairman James Dolan gave Thomas another chance now as the president and potential part-owner of the Liberty. Thomas and Dolan had a meeting with the players before training camp opened Sunday.“It was necessary to do that because we live in a society where the information that’s out there, some’s accurate, some’s not accurate,” Thomas said. “We felt it was necessary to meet, discuss and have an open forum. The players we have and the people in this room, they’re grown women and they can make up their own minds and come to their own conclusions.”Coach Bill Laimbeer, who played with Thomas for years in Detroit, and the Liberty players sat on couches off to the side during the 25-minute news conference. At the end, the players applauded their new president.“It was great having that sit-down the other day to clear the air. We are all professionals and are focused on what happens on the court,” said Liberty guard Essence Carson. “All the interaction I’ve had with him so far has been good.”A Hall of Fame, championship-winning point guard with the Pistons, Thomas has failed to match that success in his post-playing career. He tried college coaching after leaving the Knicks but was fired by Florida International in 2012 after going 26-65 in three seasons.Thomas spoke Thursday at a podium in a makeshift area normally used as a players lounge. Laimbeer joked earlier that more media were in attendance then in his first few years combined with the team. He and Thomas hoped that all the attention on the team would carry over to when the Liberty season starts at home on June 5.However, some fans won’t be attending games at Madison Square Garden. Yolanda Jackson, a Liberty season-ticket holder since 1999, said she canceled her subscription.“I’m not planning to attend any Liberty games,” said Jackson, who works in marketing with female athletes. “And since I’m so disappointed in the way the WNBA has handled this situation, I doubt if I’ll be attending any games this season. The WNBA should deny his application for ownership.”Thomas filed the paperwork to be a part-owner of the team last week. He needs approval from the league’s board of governors for his ownership application to go through. WNBA President Laurel J. Richie told The Associated Press last week that she hopes to have that resolved before the season starts June 5.Thomas wouldn’t talk about his ownership petition.“That’s a confidential discussion,” he said.DOUG FEINBERG, AP Basketball Writer___AP Sports Writer Melissa Murphy in New York contributed to this report.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Dialing in to ESC Minneapolis 2017

Created by Connor Nishijima, this is a LED-based interpretation of a Nixie tube. I closed that column by saying:The reason I’m waffling about all of this here is that I will be attending the forthcoming Embedded Systems Conference (ESC), November 8-9, in Minneapolis, and I plan on bringing a Lixie to show to my chums (and anyone else who doesn’t get out of the way fast enough).I’ve now taken delivery of 12 Lixies, which will serve as the primary display mechanism for a project I’m calling a Countdown Clock. These will be grouped in pairs that will display the years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining until the start of the event in question. I’m still debating with myself how to present the Lixies — either as a single row containing six pairs, or as two rows each containing three pairs. Now, suppose we wish to use the Countdown Clock to mark my 100th birthday, for example. This momentous occasion will occur on May 29, 2057 (it might be best to mark your calendar now). I certainly don’t want to be getting up early on my birthday, so let’s set the kickoff time to be exactly 10:00 a.m. This means that we will need some way to enter 57 05 29 10 00 00 to represent the year, month, day, hour, minute, and second, respectively. Once this date has been locked in, the clock will use the current day/time to determine how long there is to go, and it will then start to display the number of years, months, days, hours, minutes, and seconds remaining. So, the next question is how we are going to enter the date of the target event. In fact, I’m planning on using multiple mechanisms. For ease of use, I’ll use my smartphone to control the Countdown Clock via Bluetooth. I’m thinking of a simple app that allows me to add, delete, and modify multiple events. But I also want to provide an entry mechanism that provides a little more panache and joie de vivre , as it were, and few things provide more style and chic than a retro rotary telephone controller.(Source: Max Maxfield) The controller shown above is a restored Western Electric #7 Dial for 500 series telephones (the model 500 telephone series was the standard domestic desk telephone set issued by the Bell System in North America from 1950 through the 1984 Bell System divestiture.) I acquired this little beauty from the Old Phone Shop website. If we look at the back, we see two switches. The one in the center closes when you start to dial an individual number and opens again once you’ve finished. The one on the right opens and closes to generate a series of pulses corresponding to the number being dialed.(Source: Max Maxfield) In the case of North American phones, one pulse corresponds to the number ‘1’, two pulses to the number ‘2’, and so on up to 10 pulses for ‘0’, but different countries used different schemes, so make sure to check things out if you plan on doing something like this yourself.I connected the terminals from the right switch up to a 5V supply via a 10KΩ resistor, hooked it up to an oscilloscope, and dialed the number ‘7’. The result was seven pert positive-going pulses as shown below.(Source: Max Maxfield) Each pulse has a duration of close to 100ms (60ms at 5V and 37ms at 0V). One thing that surprised me is just how regular these pulses are. Also, even though I zoomed in, I was surprised to see that there is no discernible switch bounce (I wonder how they managed that). Will you be attending ESC Minneapolis yourself? If so, I’m planning on bringing my telephone dial for “show and tell.” You’ll be amazed how good it feels in use — possibly more so if you actually used one when you were younger without thinking much about the underlying technology.I’ll also be presenting two sessions: Advanced Technologies for 21st Century Embedded Systems and Building an Artificial Brain. Happily, both of these talks will be in the ESC Engineering Theater, which means anyone can attend so long as they are flaunting a Free Expo Pass, but you do have to register. Hopefully I’ll see you there. I’ll be the one in the Hawaiian shirt. As always, all you have to do is shout “Max, Beer!” or “Max, Bacon!” to be assured of my undivided attention. “@Wrcooke: “…I do miss the rotary dial…”nnMe too. Thanks for sharing your story from the army — I bet this stirs memories with some of our other members.” Leave a Reply Cancel reply You must Register or Login to post a comment. Senior BCCI member asks pointed questions on controversial Yo-Yo test

first_imgBCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry has questioned the Yo-Yo test which has become a pre-requisite for selection in Team India.Recently, Mohammaed Shami was dropped for the one-off Test against Afghanistan while Ambati Rayudu, who had a dream IPL season with Chennai Super Kings, lost his place after failing the Yo-Yo test.Sanju Samson was also left out of the India A squad for the tour of England after failing the test.Chaudhry has written a letter to the Committee of Administrators (COA) asking for a proper explanation. The Print, which has a copy of the letter and it states: “At which forum was the decision taken to have a minimum score on the Yo-Yo test as a prerequisite for selection in a BCCI-selected team? Who all were present in the meeting that decided this?”Most importantly, once this decision was taken, to whom was the same communicated? Was it communicated to all first-class players in India? Was it communicated to all List A players in India? Was it communicated to all state cricket associations to communicate to their players?”WHAT IS THE YO-YO TEST?The test involves players running between two cones set 20 metres apart on the field. One shuttle includes a process where the player starts on a beep and needs to reach the cone at the other end before the second beep goes off. He is then required to turn back and return to the first cone before the third beep. There are different speed levels for these shuttles. Players start at speed level 5 (one shuttle) before moving to speed level 9 (also one shuttle). Speed level 11 (two shuttles), speed level 12 (three shuttles) and speed level 14 (four shuttles) follow. From speed level 14, there are eight shuttles per level.advertisementBIZARRE POLICY?Former India player Sandeep Patil recently slammed the team’s policies towards the Yo-Yo tests.”Look, I am not against fitness being a criteria,” Patil told Mid-day. “…But I find it very absurd that a player is dropped for failing the Yo Yo test after he has been picked in the squad. In this way, you are disturbing the balance of the team; you are playing with the career of a cricketer.”Patil, a former selector, found it bizarre that the eventual selection now lies in the hands of the trainer.BCCI NOT HAPPYLast week, Amitabh Chaudhry, the BCCI Acting Secretary said the Indian team management needed to follow proper procedure for the Yo-Yo tests if they were deemed so critical.”I would only like to go as far as saying that if the Yo-Yo tests were such an integral part then they should have been done through a proper procedure. I think reservations are based on the fact that procedures have not been followed,” he said.TEAM INDIA ADAMANTHowever, India coach Ravi Shastri said the Yo-Yo test was here to stay and players had to pass the test to stay in contention.”I think it’s a combination of both ability and fitness. If you are fit, you can enhance that ability. That is one thing that has been emphasized on while designing the Yo-Yo fitness test. And it is here to stay. Whoever thinks it’s a one off thing, he is sadly mistaken and that person can take a walk,” Shastri said.”The philosophy is simple. You pass the test, you play. You don’t, you sit. So this is not going to go anywhere. The captain leads from the front, the selectors the management are on the same page. And the boys have responded extremely well.”last_img read more

You are showing utter disregard for livelihood of players: TNCA to CoA

first_imgNew Delhi, Jul 6 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) today came up with a strong riposte to the Committee of Administrators’ (CoA) threat of de-recognising the Tamil Nadu Premier League and slammed the Vinod Rai-led panel for “showing utter disregard for livelihood of players”. The CoA yesterday issued an advisory in which it warned TNCA from allowing players from other states to take part in the TNPL starting July 11, stating that it violates article 28 (b) of the existing constitution. The TNCA, after its meeting today, sent a strongly-worded letter written by their joint secretary RI Palani. “We had informed the acting president and the acting secretary of the BCCI about TNPL. Why is the CoA unnecessarily interfering, only they know. TNPL is being organised for three years now,” a TNCA official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. The rules for the Inter-State T20 leagues were passed on July 3 and TNCA’s draft for outstation players was scheduled on July 4. Many believe that if the CoA had right intentions, it would have actually given enough time to TNCA to withdraw the draft process. Instead, the committee chose to wait till the TNCA completed its draft process and then fired a salvo, threatening to disband the tournament. However, it is not known whether the CoA had kept Star Sports, who are the official broadcasters for the event in the loop. Star also holds the rights for India’s international games at home. The letter sent by Palani makes it clear that the TNCA is in no mood to bow down to the CoA’s diktat.advertisement Palani, in fact, made a valid point about how the likes of Unmukt Chand, Sheldon Jackson would be able to earn a livelihood. These are not sought-after players in the Indian Premier League. “The advisory exhibit a complete and utter disregard of the interests of players who would be deprived of an opportunity to earn a living and would perhaps lose a valuable opportunity to showcase their talents to the world, Palani wrote in his letter. The TNCA joint secretary also said that never has there been a precedence of seeking permission for a state level tournament. Having an outstation player to take part in various club leagues with the go-ahead from his home state, too, has never been an issue. “The regulations of the BCCI provide that members of BCCI are not required to seek approval for conducting tournaments within its territorial jurisdiction unless the tournament involves players from outside such jurisdiction.” “We have indicated several instances, in our earlier letters, of players representing one member for BCCI Tournaments and the same players participating in tournaments organized by other members provided that the members inter se had no objection. BCCI’s approval was never required or sought in any of those instances.” Desperate to not get caught in the crossfire between the CoA and TNCA, it will be interesting to see what the respective players and their state associations do in the coming days. Suzuki Ertiga Sport image leaked ahead of official unveil

first_imgJapanese vehicle manufacturer Suzuki has geared up to showcase its range of concept cars at the ongoing Gaikindo Indonesian International Auto Show held at Jakarta, Indonesia. However, before the actual showcase, a set of images of what seems to be the upcoming Ertiga Sport has surfaced on the internet. The concept Ertiga Sport in the image gets a brown shade of paint, large wheels with low-profile tires, and a body kit with added skirts on the side, and front and rear bumpers. The radiator grille is custom mesh from Suzuki with smoked headlamps. The vehicle looks sporty and gets a lower ground clearance than the stock model, which means there could be tweaks in the suspension as well. The tweaked Ertiga is slated to be revealed at the Auto show. Microsoft to kill Edge browser on Windows 10 soon: Report

first_imgSince Microsoft rolled out the stable build of Windows 10 back in 2015, it started laying emphasis on its new default web browser – Microsoft Edge. With Edge, Microsoft promised a new browsing experience that gels well with the ethos of Windows 10. However, due to a plethora of bugs and instability, Windows 10 users never lapped it up in the same manner as Google’s Chrome. Microsoft kept on adding several features over the years but Edge couldn’t extend a lead over Google’s Chrome. Hence, Microsoft has decided to axe the Edge browser on Windows 10.According to one of the latest reports from Windows Central, Microsoft has finally given up on the Edge browser internally and is now looking to develop an alternative browser that will be acting as the default one on future versions of Windows 10. The Redmond giant is no more in the mood to work further on the EdgeHTML rendering engine and hence axe development on Edge. The rumours state that the new browser will be using Chromium – Google’s rendering engine that powers the Chrome browser, for the foundation of the new browser. The project is presently named as Anaheim and will host web pages in a fashion pretty similar to how Google’s Chrome handles it.It’s still unknown whether this new web browser will carry forward the Edge branding or adopt a completely new identity. Also, it’s still unknown whether Anaheim will sport a similar user interface to Edge or wear completely new clothes. There could also be a chance that Microsoft will retain the Edge browser alongside the new browser, similar to how Internet Explorer’s existence after the incoming of Edge.advertisementAlthough this just a rumour, for now, evidence of Microsoft considering new web browser has already surfaced on the Internet. Microsoft engineers were spotted committing codes to the Chromium project, thereby suggesting that they will be actively working with Google for an enhanced web browsing experience on Windows 10.Lately, Microsoft has been actively modifying its ecosystems for adapting to popular third-party apps and services. We had previously seen Microsoft trying its best to replicate a Continuum-like feature between Windows 10 and Android. They have also re-engineered the MS Office suite to work well with both Android and iOS devices. By adopting the foundations of the Chrome browser, it now becomes clear that Microsoft wants to give those services to users that they like, even if they are not from Microsoft.ALSO READ | December Security Patch improves RAM management, camera performance for Google Pixel 3last_img read more

Test specialists Rahane and Pujara likely to play for India A against England Lions

first_imgIndia’s fourth Test against Australia at Sydney, starting January 3, 2019, will be the team’s last assignment for six months and the BCCI is likely to prepare a road map for the longest format specialists. There is a possibility that some of the senior India players may play against England Lions (A team) when they tour India for a full-fledged series in end January-February.Once India finish their Test engagements against Australia, they will next play the five-day format in July, 2019 against the West Indies in a two-Test series as part of the World Test Championship. However, a few like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane might have precious little to do once the Ranji Trophy ends in the last week of January.”The fast bowlers workload management is a different issue but in case of some of the Test specialists, we might play them against England Lions. England Lions are coming for a full series where they will play four day Tests as well as List A and T20 matches,” a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI Saturday. It is learnt that the selectors might look at Pujara, Rahane and Prithvi Shaw (expected to be fully fit by then) to play the longer format matches. As of now, Pujara is expected to feature in the Ranji Trophy quarter-finals, starting January 15, as Saurashtra are currently on top of their group with 25 points. In case of Mumbai, the chances of qualification are bleak as they have only eight points from five games. Rahane, who is not a part of India’s limited overs scheme of things will next play the Mushtaq Ali Trophy followed by IPL for Rajasthan Royals.advertisementOnce Saurashtra’s Ranji engagements finish, Pujara will have nothing to do as he has not been picked by any IPL franchise. There is the Mushtaq Ali Trophy but with the IPL auctions over, it will not hold the same kind of importance like last edition. It’s not that Pujara will need to prove anything to anyone but there is a school of thought that serious match time won’t do any harm to him or for that matter Rahane. Also Read | Virat Kohli is the energy of this Indian team and the clear leader: Brad HoggAlso Read | India vs Australia: Australian journalist uses random video to ridicule Virat KohliAlso Read | Sanju Samson and Charulatha’s breathtaking Kovalam wedding: See photoslast_img read more

ICC cricket World Cup 2019: Karunaratne named Sri Lanka’s ODI captain, Malinga ousted

first_imgVeteran pacer Lasith Malinga was sacked as ODI skipper with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Wednesday naming Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne to lead the country at the 50 over World cup in England beginning May 30.The World cup squad will be announced Thursday, SLC said.”Karunaratne’s appointment was ratified by the Minister of Telecommunications, Foreign Employment and Sports Honorable Harin Fernando,” Sri Lanka Cricket said in a release. The 31-year-old Karunaratne, who didn’t play a single ODI since the 2015 World Cup, has only featured in 17 ODIs and averages 15.83 with a high score of 60.He will replace Malinga, who had captained the team during the 0-5 loss to South Africa in the ODI series.Malinga, who led Sri Lanka to a World T20 trophy in 2014, had personal disagreements with the team management and certain senior players, which also soured his stint as captain.Karunaratne, a Test opener, forced himself into the ODI captaincy following his success in the Test arena. He led Sri Lanka to a historic 2-0 Test triumph in South Africa and made Sri Lanka the only Asian side to win a Test series in South Africa. The other option was Angelo Mathews, who has been Sri Lanka’s ODI captain in two separate stints before. But Mathews is said to have declined the offer to captain citing his disagreements with coach Chandika Hathurusinghe. The news will come as a blow for Malinga, who had played a domestic match in Kandy, only 14 hours after playing an IPL match for his franchise Mumbai Indians in Mumbai, earlier this month.advertisementApart from Malinga and Mathews, Sri Lanka had also tried Dinesh Chandimal and Thisara Perera to lead the side at various stages over the past two years since the retirement of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene in 2014.The team’s fortune dwindled as it slipped in ICC rankings in all formats since then. Also Read | Scared to bowl against Hardik Pandya at the World Cup: Lasith MalingaAlso Read | ICC Cricket World Cup 2019: Pakistan squad to be announced on Thursday with two reservesAlso Read | England leave Jofra Archer out of preliminary 2019 ICC World Cup squadlast_img read more
