Drake Hits 15 Three-Pointers In 98-58 Win At Illinois State

first_img Box Score (HTML) Box Score (PDF) NORMAL, Ill. – Junior Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) scored a game-high 26 points as the Drake University women’s basketball team shot past the Illinois State Redbirds by a score of 98-58 on Friday night at Redbird Arena. Wendell’s big night moved her to 10th all-time in Drake history with 1,685 career points as she passed former standout Rachael Hackbarth (2008-12). Drake (17-6, 10-2 MVC) had balanced scoring as all nine Bulldogs scored at least three points and made at least one three-pointer as the team made a season-high 15 from beyond the arc. Joining Wendell in double figures was junior Sara Rhine (Eldon, Mo.) with 20 points who also added nine rebounds while junior Caitlin Ingle (Runnells, Iowa) scored 10 points and handed out a game-leading eight assists. Wendell posted an impressive stat line along with her game-high 26, adding six rebounds, six assists, four steals and one block in 26 minutes. “I loved the way we moved the ball as a team tonight,” said Drake head coach Jennie Baranczyk. “Illinois State dictated the pace in the first quarter, but we stayed with it and kept to our philosophy and game plan and the shots started falling in the second quarter. I’ve never seen every player on a team hit at least one three-pointer in the same game.” Illinois State (6-16, 4-7 MVC) was led by Katrina Beck with 13 points and Shakeela Fowler with 12 points. Drake was up by 12 points at halftime, but quickly broke the game wide open early in the third quarter as a 10-0 Bulldogs’ run doubled up the score at 55-33. Rhine scored four points and freshman Nicole Miller (Walker, Iowa) and sophomore Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) each made a three-pointer as the run propelled the team to 32 points in the period. Emma Donahue (Naperville, Ill.), Paige Greiner (Williamsburg, Iowa) and Miller just missed double digits as they each had nine points. Dean finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Greiner made three three-pointers for the second straight game. Drake opened the second quarter with an 11-2 scoring run after the score was tied after the first period. The Bulldogs overcame a slow shooting start in the first quarter by making their final three shots to help even the score at 18-18 after one. Wendell moved into 10th all-time with a three-pointer at the 5:55 mark. Drake closes the weekend at Indiana State on Sunday with a 1 p.m. tipoff against the Sycamores. Health Advice Keeps Changing

first_imgMany things the experts told us were good for us or bad for us have “evolved” – sometimes into opposite counsel.Health is of huge concern in science, because the only organisms doing science are human beings. We can watch what happens to us and others when we eat certain things. This should be one of the easiest, most repeatable subjects in science. Why can’t the experts get it right?Components of heart healthy diet may differ from what was previously thought (Medical Xpress). Dairy products and meat are back on the table. Much of the advice from a huge study of 218,000 people from 50 countries remains, like limiting carbohydrates, but meat and dairy is OK again. “Our results appeared to apply to people from different parts of the world and so the findings are globally applicable.”Vitamin D—a pseudo-vitamin for a pseudo-disease (Medical Xpress). It wasn’t long ago that the media strongly encouraged most of us to take vitamin D:We are still in love with vitamins a century after they were discovered, with half the US and UK population taking a supplement. Vitamin D – the sunshine vitamin – is the favourite and is believed to have the most proven benefits. Governments, including the UK government, have said that the evidence for vitamin D’s health benefits is so overwhelming that every adult should take it as a supplement for at least six months of the year. Now, that advice is being called into question by a study involving 500,000 participants. Vitamin D’s alleged benefits to strengthen bones seems spurious. Scientists don’t know how to characterize vitamin D deficiency. Some are not even sure it should be called a vitamin at all.We have created another pseudo-disease that is encouraged by vitamin companies, patient groups, food manufacturers public health departments and charities. Everyone likes to believe in a miracle vitamin pill and feels “they are doing something”.How vitamin D and fish oil affect risk of heart attack, stroke and cancer (Medical Xpress). After reading the previous article, here’s one to confuse you again. Another big study is trying to figure out if vitamin D and fish oil really do some good. So before taking them off your daily supplement routine, wait for this study to see if these popular pills actually have some science behind their purported benefits (or not).Massive trial shows limited value for popular supplements (Nature). The world’s leading journal weighs in on the controversy, saying, “No evidence found to indicate that vitamin D and fish oil fight cancer.” Both popular supplements also failed to show any benefit for preventing heart disease. This from a 5-year controlled trial involving 25,000 healthy men and women in their fifties and older. Is a low carb diet dangerous? (Medical Xpress). Athletes and the health conscious assiduously cutting their carbs to get fit might want to reconsider. Low carb diets might not only be useless; they could even be dangerous.Pasta. Sourdough. Mashed potatoes. If you are one of the legions of dieters out there who have been religiously cutting carbs in an attempt to get lean and fit, you may be surprised by a recent study that showed that low carb diets may not be healthy after all. In fact, they may be unsafe.Research presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress in Germany found that diets very low in carbohydrates may actually increase the risk of premature death over time. Yikes.Read the article to see why this is. Those tempted by the low-carb fad sometimes compensate by eating too much fat.Can chocolate, tea, coffee and zinc help make you more healthy? Scientists discover new protection against oxidative stress (Science Daily). Chocolate and caffeine used to be twin bogeymen of a poor diet. This article resuscitates them somewhat, arguing that adding zinc to the polyphenols in these foods could have a beneficial effect. No such thing as sugar highs, says pediatric endocrinologist (Medical Xpress). Parents who wish to argue with this expert might have to reconsider whether it’s really the sugar that makes kids hyper. It might be the excitement of Halloween candy and birthday parties that is doing it – not the sugar.“It’s a myth,” said Elizabeth Rosolowsky, a pediatric endocrinologist in the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry.“Parents may observe more energy in their kids after eating sugar, but it’s one of those self-fulfilling notions—a belief that comes true because we are acting like it’s true,” she said.Rosolowsky busts another myth, that sugar causes diabetes. It’s not the sugar, but the excess of carbs that gets stored as fat that predisposes some to become diabetics, she says.Food activates brown fat: How brown adipose tissue reacts to a carbohydrate-rich meal (Science Daily). Not all fat is bad. Brown fat is the “good fat,” experts think, because it produces energy instead of just storing it. The question is how to activate it. Believe it or not, exposure to cold, or a meal of carbohydrates, might be the key. Read the article before trusting it; the bottom line is that “further studies” are needed.Update 11/16/18: An article on Science Daily basically admits that scientists still do not know if dietary fat is good or bad.Jonathan Wells jokes in Zombie Science about evolving dietary advice. He likes eggs, but remembers when the experts all said that eggs are bad for you. Now, they are respectable again. He didn’t stop eating eggs, but now can feel less guilty about it. Have you had a similar experience? You try to eat what’s healthy, only to find out that something you believed was good for you is actually bad for you, or vice versa. Years ago the government pushed the “Food Pyramid.” It was posted in most schools. Recently, scientists exposed special interests behind the iconic diagram, and some think the pyramid should be inverted. If scientists cannot be sure about something as close to home as our bodies and our health, how can they pontificate about what the world and the universe were doing millions and billions of years ago? Let this be a lesson about science; it is always tentative. You can count on future findings to overturn some of the things that are taught as gospel truth today. In the meantime, it’s probably best to trust some of your common sense. Eat a variety of foods, don’t eat anything to excess, exercise as well as watching your diet, avoid fads, and remember that attitude is probably just as important as what you eat. Microsoft Builds Team For New Kinect And – Maybe – Augmented-Reality Glasses

first_imgIT + Project Management: A Love Affair Related Posts 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now markhachman Cognitive Automation is the Immediate Future of… Two recent Microsoft job postings suggest that Microsoft is building a team to design what could be the next generation of its Kinect technology: the rumored “Fortaleza” augmented-reality glasses.Kinect IncubatorsIn the first job listing, Microsoft claims that the “team that incubated Kinect” is designing a new consumer device, and is seeking a new director of electrical engineering to lead it.“Microsoft is working on revolutionizing consumer electronic devices,” the listing states. “The team that incubated Kinect and profoundly changed the way people interact with technology is forming a product development team to change the world again! We are a growing team of experienced device product developers, working in a startup environment on redefining experiences by making technology disappear. We are developing ground-breaking hardware, software and experiences across computer vision, machine learning, human-computer interaction, image and video processing, networking and graphics. We will transform our ideas into reality through shipping a first-to-market product.”The team will work within the Interactive Entertainment Business unit at Microsoft, led by ex-Electronic Arts exec Don Mattrick, and includes the development and marketing of Xbox 360, Xbox LIVE, the Kinect, music and video services, TV and Mediaroom partners, and PC and mobile interactive entertainment. Massive Non-Desk Workforce is an Opportunity fo… Tags:#enterprise#gaming#Microsoft Given anotherMicrosoft job listing, the division will likely also include the Microsoft Surface tablet team as well. The fact that Microsoft is building a next-generation Kinect device isn’t that much of a surprise; after all, the Guinness Book of World Records listed the motion-sensing peripheral as the fastest-selling consumer tech device ever – until the Apple iPad 2 bested it 15 days later. The combination of features Microsoft cites – hardware, software, computer vision, machine learning, et cetera – also lends itself to the Kinect peripheral. Not surprisingly, Microsoft declined to comment. “We’re always looking for talented people to join the Interactive Entertainment Business to innovate now and in the future,” a spokeswoman said via email. “We don’t have any further comment on this or any other job posting.”If Microsoft was working on a next-generation Kinect peripheral, it could be based on the “holodeck” patent it recently applied for, although there’s really nothing in the job listing that indicates that.Small-Form-Factor Consumer Electronics?A second key job listing at Microsoft would also seem to confirm the Kinect conclusion, especially since the mechanical engineer listing seeks someone experienced in designing small-form-factor consumer electronics. But wait: the candidate Microsoft is seeking for this position must also have experience in displays, batteries, antennas and acoustics. Only the latter is Kinect-specific, as the powered Kinect peripheral lacks a display or antenna.Microsoft could be staffing up on more than one project, of course, or working on designing an integrated Kinect. Another scenario is that this mechanical engineer would be asked to work on a future revision of a Surface tablet, which would use a battery, antenna and display. Microsoft could also be working to integrate Kinect into notebook PCs, a future already envisioned by Intel.Rob Sanfilippo, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft, said it’s tough to read the tea leaves. “That’s a tough one to speculate on since it’s such a general description,” he said of the job listing.“Certainly Microsoft will continue to advance Kinect and it will probably develop related technologies. I expect the next Xbox console to have integrated Kinect hardware which will likely be more capable than today’s Kinect, although this job position probably isn’t related to that since it’s very late in that product’s development cycle.”But there’s another intriguing possibility, that Microsoft could be finally putting a team together to design the “Fortaleza” augmented-reality glasses.“Fortaleza” Augmented-Reality Glasses But there’s another intriguing possibility, that Microsoft could be finally putting a team together to design the “Fortaleza” augmented-reality glasses. In June, a document titled XBox 720-9-24 Checkpoint Draft 1 was posted to Scribd, and later removed at the behest of the law firm Covington & Burling LLP, which has represented Microsoft in the past.According to the document, the first generation of Fortaleza is a pair of Wi-Fi enabled glasses set to debut in 2014, with the rumored next-generation “Xbox 720.” The leaked slide appears to show a player in her living room “seeing” an imaginary desperado projected on her glasses. Future revisions would get 4G connectivity and a connection to the console to project movies and TV shows on them, a sort of portable version of the Xbox 720, and one that would be different take on Google’s own Google Glass. It seems reasonable, on the surface, that a hardware team could put together a Fortaleza-type device in the slightly more than two years before the 2014 holiday season.A couple of job postings certainly leave room for a great deal of speculation. What we do know is that Microsoft is working on its own next big thing, and we’ll just have to wait and see what it is.Fortaleza images via PCMag.com.last_img read more

6 Factors to Determine the Success of Your IoT Project

first_imgThe emergence of IoT has led to work smarter and revolutionizing the way employees work and interact with others. Workplaces are getting smarter; employees are being more productive and potential for smart workplace scheduling is evolving.According to a recent survey by Cisco, deployment of IoT is stalled 60% of the time while only 26% of respondents consider their deployment successful. When it comes to deployment of IoT, a number of factors decide the fate of the project. Either you win or you lose, however, the poor implementation would lead you to lose money and time. How can developers implement a successful IoT project to avoid any loss is the biggest question? Let us have a look at how IoT can be deployed successfully without losing money and wasting time.1.) Strategic Planning before Deploying Before deploying IoT, it is necessary to have a strategic plan to lead your project to success. At this stage, you have to identify your goals, success metrics, business process evaluation and technical inventory. Moreover, you must also have a strong team of qualified experts to assess the opportunities and threats before deploying Internet of things. In a recent Bain and Co. IoT study conducted with over 90% of executives said that “their organization is currently in the state of planning and proof of concept stage”.No matter how longer you to have to spend on your research and plans, it will ultimately lead to reducing the failure rate.2.) Allocate the Hardware Devices Enterprise IoT Solution is not like an application that can be started instantly as the idea comes to mind. The deployment of IoT requires allocation of equipment and machinery from the present inventory of devices.Keeping in view your business goals and expected results, you may have to collaborate with OEM to source bridges, sensors, adapters, actuators and other hardware. After the above step, the organization would have assigned everything that takes to onboard physical devices to the connected platforms.3.) Estimate the Cost of Not Deploying IoT IoT projects will affect the overall process in your organization. Before deploying IoT in your organization, you must determine the real cost of the process being improved. The fixed costs are easy to determine while the variable ones are difficult to evaluate. If you think the cost can be achieved, the project should not be left in the middle.4.) Implement Security and Governance Like any other enterprise solution, IoT security is critical and datasets should be unnamed, inscribed and compressed before processing. It is necessary to have a governance model to limit the access to sensitive and private data. Policies will identify the roles of each individual to control the devices and access the business intelligence dashboard. IoT security must be aligned with existing corporate policies and best security practices.5.) Drive Continuous Improvement Your IoT project should be scalable and improve with the passage of time. As your organization is set to expand and grow, you cannot afford to set your IOT project on the same level. Look for the future prospects and strategize your IoT project mindfully in order to take the leap. The best way is to ask an expert and consult the IoT solution provider to give the best solution that is easily adaptable and scalable at the same time.6.) Intuitive User Experience for Decision Makers Generally, IoT solutions are devised to have user experience meant for two personas including decision makers and operation manager. Operation managers are directly responsible for managing devices later though IoT solution. In fact, they are responsible for maintaining the flawless functioning of devices. In case of business decision makers, they are contingent on data-driven insights for business decision making. They need access to dashboards that represents critical parameters originating from the hot path and cold part analytics. Moreover, they are also granted permission to change the policies and rules according to the changing needs of the business.Author Bio:Ray Parker is an entrepreneur and internet marketer with over 15 years of experience in Search Engine Optimization, Creative Writing and Digital Marketing with IQVIS. Six Regrets

first_imgWasting your talents. You were born with some talent. You may not recognize your gift. Or you may have recognized your gift and set it aside because you didn’t believe your talent was enough. Your talent is a gift for you to use. If you believe it is a gift, then not using it would be to be ungrateful for what you have been given. It would also deprive the world of your talent and deprive it of a gift that only you can give. You don’t want to regret wasting your talents. Not making a contribution. You are here for a reason. You are here to make a difference, to make a contribution. You may not know what your purpose is right now. That just means your job is to figure that out. If you do know what your purpose is and what your contribution is supposed to be, that’s what you should be doing. Even if it’s not how you make a living. Don’t regret not doing what you were here to do.Not spending time with the people you love. Our work keeps us away from home and away from the ones we love. It’s tough to find the time to spend with the most important people in your hectic life. But ultimately, a lack of investment of time and emotional energy here is what you are likely to regret most of all. You can’t put a hold on time with the people whom you care about most. Your time is short, and no matter how much time you spend here, you will later wish it had been more. Double down and don’t regret not spending time with your people. Not forgiving or accepting forgiveness. Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself. At some point, you will understand that most of the times you believed that someone had wronged you, the other person was suffering far more than you suffered. They were also suffering a much deeper pain. Most of all, you will realize that you need forgiveness as much as anyone else, and you’ll hope that no one deprives you of that forgiveness. When they offer forgiveness, accept it.Living someone else’s life. There are plenty of people who are willing to tell you what your life should be based on what they believe their perfect life should be like. But their life belongs to them, and your life belongs to you alone. You will never be truly happy allowing someone else’s ideas, opinions, or expectations determine for you what your life should be. You will never regret living your own life, and making it 100% your own adventure. Not living fully. Life is made up of experiences. You get to decide what those experiences are. Living fully means using your talents and gifts, making your contribution, spending time with the people you love, forgiving and accepting forgiveness, and blazing your trail. Your life is yours to live fully. Do everything you want to do, and don’t regret a minute of it.last_img read more

Those conspiring for President’s Rule in Maharashtra are insulting people’s mandate: Sanjay Raut

first_imgSenior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday claimed there was a “consensus” between the BJP and his party before the Maharashtra Assembly elections on sharing the chief minister’s post.Amid the stalemate continuing over government formation in the state, Mr. Raut told reporters here that no fresh proposal has been received from the BJP or sent to it.He claimed farmers and the working class want a Shiv Sena chief minister and have hopes and expectations from the Uddhav Thackeray-led party. To a question on when there would be a consensus on the chief minister’s post, the Rajya Sabha member said, “There was a consensus on the post before elections.”Ruling out any new proposal for government formation, Mr. Raut reiterated that the Shiv Sena expects implementation of what was decided and agreed upon before the elections.“Why waste time on new proposals. We want a discussion on what was agreed upon earlier. No new proposal has been received or sent,” he said.On the possibility of imposition of President’s rule in the state, Mr. Raut said, “We will not be responsible for it. Those conspiring to do this are insulting the people’s mandate.”He said wherever Uddhav Thackeray and his son Aaditya Thackeray, who won the state polls from Worli seat in Mumbai, were touring to review crop losses due to unseasonal rains, the farmers and working class were looking at the party with hopes and expectations.“All are eager to have chief minister from the Shiv Sena,” he said.Mr. Raut refused to respond to a question on whether the NCP has agreed to share the chief minister’s post. “We will talk about it,” he said. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP on Tuesday said a political alternative can be worked out in the state if the Shiv Sena declared that it had snapped ties with the BJP.Sources in the NCP said their party wants Arvind Sawant, the lone Shiv Sena minister in the Union government, to resign before going ahead further with the Sena. There has been no headway in government formation after results of the state polls were declared on October 24.The BJP, which won 105 seats, and the Shiv Sena, which bagged 56 seats, are locked in a bitter tussle over sharing of the chief minister’s post and ministerial portfolios in new government, even 13 days after the Assembly poll verdict handed them enough seats to cobble up a coalition government. They won 161 seats together in the 288-member House, much above the halfway mark of 145.Besides, the opposition NCP won 54 seats while the Congress got 44 seats.last_img read more
