Pollinator workshops offered

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Have you ever thought what it would be like to live in a world without apples, blueberries, strawberries, chocolate, almonds, melons, peaches, or pumpkins? Researchers have indicated that without animal pollinators, these foods would no longer exist.Three-fourths of the world’s flowering plants depend on pollinators to reproduce. Most fruit, vegetable and seed crops — and other plants that provide fiber, medicines, and fuel — are pollinated by animals. Some scientists estimate that one out of every three bites of human food exists because of animal pollinators like bees, butterflies and moths, birds and bats, and beetles and other insects.Pollinators visit flowers in their search for food (nectar and pollen). During a flower visit, a pollinator may accidentally brush against the flower’s reproductive parts, unknowingly depositing pollen from a different flower. The plant then uses the pollen to produce a fruit or seed. Many plants cannot reproduce without pollen carried to them by foraging pollinators.Bees are the main pollinators for fruits and vegetables. There are over 4,000 species of bees native to North America. They nest underground, in twigs and debris, or in dead trees. Nectar-seeking butterflies are daytime garden visitors, and moths are their nocturnal counterpart. These popular creatures pollinate many plants. Hummingbirds are the most common avian pollinators in the continental United States. These tiny wonders prefer tubular flowers in bright, warm colors — especially red.Pollinators are in trouble — bees are disappearing and bats are dying. These and other animal pollinators face many challenges. Habitat loss, disease, parasites, and environmental contaminants have all contributed to their decline. To learn more about pollinators and increase their habitat and populations, plan to attend two free workshops hosted by the Delaware SWCD on June 14 and July 12 at the Orange Township Hall, 1680 Orange Rd, Lewis Center, OH. Each workshop will be held from 7-9 pm. These are separate workshops addressing different topics. Anderson abused, threatened to break Ravindra Jadeja’s teeth

first_imgICC had earlier given a clean chit to England’s James Anderson due to lack of video evidenceHe may have been let off after an ICC hearing but it has now come to light that England pacer James Anderson did admit to abusing Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja during their altercation in the opening Test in Nottingham.According to a report in ‘ESPNCricinfo’, Anderson had threatened to break Jadeja’s teeth during the altercation. The matter was brought to a close earlier this week when an ICC appointed judicial commissioner exonerated both the players of the respective charges brought against them.”…he (Anderson) admitted to having continuously abused Jadeja, pushing him and acting in breach of the spirit of cricket. He also threatened to break Jadeja’s teeth, the BCCI’s counsel contended while appealing the sentence earlier handed to Jadeja by match referee David Boon,” the report said.”These were two different but overlapping cases. The BCCI counsel took part in the appeal against Jadeja’s sentence, but the case involving Anderson was pursued by the ICC’s lawyer, as is the protocol for Level 3 charges. The BCCI counsel didn’t get a chance to cross-examine Anderson during that main case but did so during the Jadeja appeal.”The cross-examination was intense and aggressive, say those present, and began with the BCCI counsel addressing Anderson using some of the swear words allegedly used by the player, catching him by surprise,” he added.Chronicling the incident, the report stated that the abuse by Anderson was continuous.”The incident took place as the players were walking off for lunch on the second day of the Trent Bridge Test. Anderson had appealed for a catch at the wicket against Jadeja with the first ball of the over, after which he was seen having a word with Jadeja. Umpire Bruce Oxenford’s witness statement said he intervened and asked Anderson to stop chirping. The chirping, though, continued,” he said.advertisementAnderson reportedly even refused to acknowledge his actions as against the spirit of the game.”Anderson didn’t contest MS Dhoni’s statement as witness that he abused Jadeja again, and asked him to return to the dressing room, this is also when he is said to have threatened to break Jadeja’s teeth. Anderson was asked if he thought his actions were against the spirit of cricket. He said, ‘Yes’,” he said.last_img read more

She said that air tankers were able to complete part of their mission in limiting the fire’s growth along the southeast flank, but had to be grounded as a precautionary measure after just a few hours because of heavy smoke. A Conair Aerial Firefighting Avro RJ85 air tanker at the North Peace Airport. South Korea to mark summit anniv with or without North

first_imgSeoul: South Korea will this week celebrate the first anniversary of a landmark summit between President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un — but Pyongyang may not take part, Seoul said Monday. The pair held their first meeting on April 27 last year in the Demilitarised Zone dividing the peninsula amid a rapid diplomatic thaw, paving the way for a historic summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump in Singapore in June. But one year later, little progress has been made on North Korea’s denuclearisation, with Pyongyang and Washington deadlocked since a second summit between Trump and Kim in Hanoi in February broke down without a deal. Also Read – Saudi Crown Prince ‘snubbed’ Pak PM, recalled jet from USMoon, who brokered the first meeting between the two mercurial leaders, has tried to salvage the diplomacy although the North has remained largely unresponsive. Since Hanoi, the North has not attended any of the eight regular weekly meetings of the heads of their joint liaison office in Kaesong, and has not taken part in other joint projects, such as excavations in the DMZ. Seoul will hold a ceremony on Saturday at Panmunjom — where Moon and Kim exchanged warm smiles and brotherly hugs — the unification ministry said, but Pyongyang’s attendance remained unclear. “When we notify the North (about the event), we will provide additional details,” ministry spokesman Lee Sang-min told reporters. Moon and Kim met three times last year — including a second impromptu encounter after Trump threatened to cancel the Singapore summit just weeks before it was due. But exchanges between Seoul and Pyongyang have significantly decreased since the failure to reach agreement in Hanoi.last_img read more

A Brief History of NY vs LA Championship Battles

The Lakers showcased one of the most dominant teams ever in their 1972 championship victory over the Knicks. And New York successfully secured its revenge over LA in the 1973 title series. Unfortunately for the Knicks, they were unable to retool after losing the core of those great early-’70s teams, and soon Celtics-Lakers would supplant Knicks-Lakers as the league’s premier cross-coastal rivalry. But if we count the New Jersey Nets as a “New York team” — at the time, they played at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, 7 miles west of Midtown Manhattan — then the 2002 NBA Finals did feature a New York-Los Angeles battle. (Granted, it was something of a lopsided one; the powerhouse Lakers swept Jason Kidd’s Nets in four games.)If we define “New York” and “Los Angeles” as their metropolitan statistical areas, then the NHL won’t be seeing its first N.Y.-LA championship battle this season. Although the Rangers and Kings have never faced each other for a Stanley Cup before, Los Angeles won its first hockey crown over the New Jersey Devils — who play in Newark, New Jersey (a part of the New York metropolitan area) — in 2012. And in 2003, the Devils beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for the Stanley Cup in seven games.Unfortunately, no such technicalities can produce a New York-Los Angeles championship clash in football. The Los Angeles Rams appeared in four pre-merger NFL Championship Games, but none were against New York teams (three came against Cleveland and one against Philadelphia). And by the time they left for St. Louis in 1995, the Rams had only one Super Bowl appearance to their credit — the same total as the New York Jets. The two cities’ more successful franchises never got on the same wavelength, either: Like the New York Giants, the Raiders have appeared in five Super Bowls, but only one as a Los Angeles-based squad (against the Washington Redskins in 1984).The timing was off when both cities had teams, and Los Angeles hasn’t been home to an NFL franchise since the 1994 season. The dream of a New York-vs.-Los Angeles Super Bowl will continue to be on hold.In the 10 championship matchups that have taken place between the two cities over the years, five have gone to Los Angeles and five to New York. The Rangers are hoping to break the tie in their favor over the next week or so, although the opening odds are about 3-to-2 against that happening. Then again, the Kings have kept things interesting throughout the playoffs, despite arguably being the league’s best team on paper. If that trend continues, look for a long, entertaining Stanley Cup Final. The Los Angeles Kings prevailed in typically dramatic style Sunday night, beating the Chicago Blackhawks in overtime in Game 7 to end the Western Conference finals. With the New York Rangers having clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Final last Thursday, the Kings’ victory sets up what is a surprisingly rare occurrence in professional sports: a championship matchup between the two biggest cities in the United States, LA and New York.New York City, of course, has been home to major pro sports since the very beginning and hosted the first “World’s Series” in 1884. Los Angeles was a relative latecomer to the professional scene; it wasn’t until 1946 that the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and the All-America Football Conference’s Los Angeles Dons became the first LA-based major pro sports teams. Since then, the two cities have faced each other with hardware on the line just 11 times, including the coming Rangers-Kings tilt: four times in MLB, four times in the NBA and three times in the NHL (these matchups have also provided a few “Where were you when … ?” moments). The first came in 1963, five years after the Dodgers uprooted themselves from, coincidentally enough, Brooklyn and put down roots in Los Angeles. Facing the heavily favored two-time defending World Series champion New York Yankees, the Dodgers put together one of the more surprising routs in sports history, sweeping the Yankees in four games. The two franchises would go on to meet in three more World Series, all between 1977 and 1981; the Yankees won in 1977 and 1978, and the Dodgers won in 1981. Of course, the 1977 World Series gave us: There have been a few close calls since. In 1986, the Anaheim-based California Angels would have faced the New York Mets in the World Series if not for a heartbreaking loss to the Boston Red Sox in the AL championship series. And in 2009, the Dodgers could have met the Yankees in the World Series again, but LA lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in a five-game NL championship series. In the NBA, it seems like the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks should have a marquee rivalry. But aside from a brief period in the early 1970s, things have been one-sided in favor of the Lakers. LA has won 10 NBA titles since 1974; New York has zero. What a rivalry it was during its halcyon days, though. Willis Reed hobbled onto the court against LA in 1970 NBA finals: read more
