India Today Web Desk ManchesterJune 27, 2019UPDATED: June 27, 2019 09:19 IST Reuters PhotoIndia will aim to continue with their unbeaten streak in the ongoing World Cup when they face a low-on-confidence West Indies team at Old Trafford on Thursday. After coming out with commanding performances in their first three World Cup games, the Men in Blue had to toil hard against Afghanistan to earn their fourth victory of the ongoing tournament in their last game.Riding on Mohammad Shami’s hat-trick, India successfully defended a below par total at a sluggish Rose Bowl wicket in Southampton last Saturday.Against Windies, Shami is likely to retain his place in the playing XI as India are unlikely to risk playing Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was sidelined due to a hamstring injury. The top-order has performed in all the four completed matches and has been the strength of the Indian team. However, the middle order looked a bit scratchy against Afghanistan and Virat Kohli would want M.S. Dhoni, Kedar Jadhav and Vijay Shankar to get into the groove and perform against the attacking bowling line-up of the Windies. With nine points from five games, India are comfortably positioned in the top four and require two wins out of the remaining four games to book their place in the semi-finals.#TeamIndia openers having a go at in the nets ahead of the game against West Indies.#CWC19 pic.twitter.com/Z19Nvt1Ux7BCCI (@BCCI) June 26, 2019Now on to a West Indies which needs a victory to have any chance of reaching the semifinals after a dramatic, five-wicket loss to 2015 runner-up New Zealand. Carlos Brathwaite’s remarkable century and dismissal – caught on the boundary – trying to hit a six for victory has boosted confidence within a West Indies team that promised so much but has only one victory so far.advertisementBut with the mathematical permutations still giving them an outside chance for a semi-final berth, West Indies will aim to pull off a complete performance against an in-form Indian side.MANCHESTER WEATHER UPDATESNot the ideal conditions for training today pic.twitter.com/la1uheffS8BCCI (@BCCI) June 25, 2019Wet weather has had a bigger impact on this tournament than any of previous World Cup, with India having to share points with New Zealand because their June 13 game was washed out at Trent Bridge – one of three games abandoned without a ball bowled.India’s win over archrival Pakistan in Manchester was also interrupted by rain, one of three results that have involved the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern run-rate calculators coming out. The forecast is for some heat for Thursday’s India-West Indies game, in the air – and on the field.
