The inaugural NOLA Crawfish Festival is gearing up to take place April 25-27 in New Orleans at NOLA Brewing Tap Room, right in the midst of Jazz Fest. Presented by NOLA Crawfish King, Live For Live Music, and NOLA Brewing Company, the festival will bring together a trifecta of Southeast Louisiana perfection – the absolute best crawfish, live music, and beer the city has to offer. With top-notch talent from George Porter, Jr., Anders Osborne, Jon Cleary, Nigel Hall, John “Papa” Gros, Billy Iuso & The Restless Natives, Papa Mali, Honey Island Swamp Band, Neville Jacobs, and dozens of other local favorites in various supergroup formations, the event promises a true New Orleans experience from top to bottom.Check out the complete schedule below, and get tickets to NOLA Crawfish Festival here.The festival will run from 3 PM-10 PM each day. Attendees can enjoy over 5,000 pounds of hot boiled crawfish prepared on-site by Chris “Shaggy” Davis and his NOLA Crawfish King staff, 20+ original varieties of ice-cold beer tapped straight from the source, and a specialty brew created just for the event. The three-day event will conclude with the Ultimate Crawfish Cook-Off, where twenty teams will compete for the best crawfish boil determined by a panel of NOLA celebrity judges.General admission includes one beer and a guaranteed minimum of two pounds of crawfish with all the fixings. Single day passes will be available, but a three-day pass is the best way to enjoy the full hometown experience. Today marks a sad chapter in music history, as the beloved R&B singer Prince passed away earlier today. As we continue to grieve over the loss of a legend, we turn to the healing power of music and explore a number of tributes performed by artists we love.As part of their 1994 Chocolate and Cheese tour, Ween stopped by Slim’s in San Francisco and did a romantic cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” Dean and Gene really brought it together for this song, taking a step back from their typical early-90’s, brown-thrashing performances. Deaner’s guitar-work, in particular, shines as he pays homage to the distinct guitar-work of the Purple One himself, while Gene’s voice echoes the emotion.Watch the beauty as it unfolds:RIP Prince. The 5th Annual Community Day was held on the grounds of Nelson County Preserve, home of the LOCKN’ Festival, this past weekend. It’s an event that features local vendors, bands, and artists, as well as all kinds of fun for people of all ages. Attendees are encouraged to bring friends and family for a full day of fun in the sun. Held near the festival’s famous wooden LOVE sign, with day long music on the Blue Ridge Bowl stage, Saturday could not have turned out more perfectly. Blue skies filled with lazy moving puffy white clouds, and a slight breeze that kept the temperatures comfortable, turned out to be a gorgeous day for this annual event. Kids showed up with baseball bats and gloves to compete in the Hit, Pitch, and Run Competition, while adults checked out the items available during the Silent Auction. Local brews and wines were available to quench your thirst, and local food trucks served up tasty delights all while local bands cranked out music from the stage. Lord Nelson, winners of last year’s Rockn’ to LOCKN’ competition, gave a jamming set on stage during the day, in addition to performances by Hogwaller Ramblers and Due South. The event everyone was waiting for began at 4:00 PM that afternoon. The final four bands competing for a coveted performance spot on the main stage during this year’s LOCKN’ festival finally arrived. The fierce competition included online voting up until Community Day. It was anyone’s game at that point. The beauty of the event is that it’s spread out over all of Virginia, and only bands from that state are allowed to compete. It’s quite an honor to secure a winning spot, as it can, and has, helped springboard national exposure for bands who have previously won. The first band to compete was The Fat Catz, finalists who represented from the Blacksburg region of Virginia. Their set ranged from light and airy instrumental jams to psychedelic tones, with jazzy funk thrown in for good measure. They started the competition off with some serious heat and energetic vibes that had the crowd on their feet. Up next were The Dharma Initiative, finalists who represented the Hampton Roads region. With two keyboard players in the band, they brought a tight, nonstop energy to the stage. Extensive jams, with touches of reggae thrown in, really showed the audience that they were giving every ounce of awesome they had at this performance. Disco Risque, finalists representing the Charlottesville region, were third in line for the event. This band crammed their set with heavy bass slaps, funkadelic trumpet, and nonstop, in your face, powerful numbers. As soon as that trumpet dropped the first notes, many attendees in the field couldn’t help but get up and dance. The final band on stage, representing the Richmond region, was DJ Williams Projekt. Once again, the funk was filling the air as this band blasted out their polished set, crammed with grooves that just didn’t quit. Attendees were treated to four incredibly talented bands, and the votes were tallied and winners announced. With voting finally closed, the winners of this year’s Rockn’ to LOCKN’ contest were The Dharma Initiative and DJ Williams Projekt. The votes were so close, and all bands gave smashing performances, that to vote for just one band made it extremely tough. In addition, last year’s winner, Moogatu, which were unable to perform on the one day that was cancelled due to weather damage, will finally get their spot on stage at this year’s festival.Overall, Community Day was a huge success, and the event will be returning to the LOCKN’ grounds once again next year. All donations, including sales from food trucks, as well as vendors pitching in, went directly to the Giving Hope Foundation, an organization that provides support to those in need when facing a cancer diagnosis. Congratulations to all of the bands who competed in the competition and be sure to look for the winners perform each day during this year’s festival. Dead & Company made their stadium debut last weekend, hitting the New York Mets’ Citi Field for two nights on Saturday and Sunday, June 25-26. The band came out in full force, led by the three Grateful Dead members, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. Of course, the guitar playing of John Mayer was in the spotlight, as his bluesy style is a perfect fit for the band. Bassist Oteil Burbridge made waves for his lightning bolt shaped mohawk, shaved in honor of the debut stadium appearance. It should go without saying, but keyboardist Jeff Chimenti made himself present with his incredible presence on the organs.The band was also joined by a very special guest, as Donna Jean Godchaux joined the band on vocals for select tracks throughout the weekend. With her help, as well as some lead vocals from Burbridge, Dead & Company really flourished on their interpretations of Grateful Dead classics. From the opening notes of “Shakedown Street” to the final encore of “Samson & Delilah,” the band was rocking hard.Thanks to Quinfolk, we have quality audio streams to share from each night of music. This past summer, fans at LOCKN’ were treated to a vast array of Dead-ly performances, from Keller Williams‘ Grateful Grass and Grateful Gospel, to two sets of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, and two Phil & Friends sets featuring dream team lineups. For the first of the two Phil Lesh sets, the Grateful Dead bassist recruited Phish members Jon Fishman and Page McConnell, former Furthur bandmate and Almost Dead bandleader Joe Russo, and The Infamous Stringdusters.This morning, LOCKN’ has released pro-shot video of Phil and this stacked lineup of Friends performing the Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” for the world to enjoy. Oklahoma jamtronica act MONTU has released their new single “56” off their upcoming EP Phases due out in late spring 2017. “56” picks up right where they left off following their last release, Blackwatch Sessions, and showcases another exceptional performance of instrumental jamtronica that echoes their high energy live performances. Our Inside Out WTNS podcast returns this week with another “Tweener” episode. In it, hosts Seth Weiner and Rob Turner first discuss Bob Dylan and some recent music articles, before revisiting their interview with Chris Kuroda (episode 18). The bulk of the original interview focuses on the details around Kuroda and the band’s decision last year to incorporate video elements into their already-superb presentation, and how Kuroda executed this transition. Preservation Hall Jazz Band have announced the release of their new album, So It Is, due out April 21 via Legacy Recordings. The record will mark the septet’s second release and will feature all-new original music, inspired by their 2015 life-changing trip to Cuba.Bandleader/composer/bassist Ben Jaffe details the influence in this statement, “In Cuba, all of a sudden we were face to face with our musical counterparts. There’s been a connection between Cuba and New Orleans since day one – we’re family. A gigantic light bulb went off and we realized that New Orleans music is not just a thing by itself; it’s part of something much bigger. It was almost like having a religious epiphany.”The music on So It Is, penned largely by Jaffe and 84 year-old saxophonist Charlie Gabriel in collaboration with the entire PHJB, stirs together that variety of influences like classic New Orleans cuisine.
