UWP returns to Parliament on Thursday

first_img Share Share Sharing is caring! LocalNews UWP returns to Parliament on Thursday by: – February 15, 2012 Tweetcenter_img Hon. Edison James. The Opposition United Workers Party (UWP) has announced that they will participate fully in the proceedings of the House of Assembly when Parliament convenes on Thursday. The Opposition has been protesting following the 2009 general elections because they claim that the government had failed to implement electoral reform and the Speaker of the House of Assembly continues to be bias towards them.Leader of the UWP Edison James confirmed this week that the party will be participating in Parliament but still has issue with the Speaker of the House of Assembly Alix Boyd-Knights.They have already provided a list of questions which they intend to pose to members of the government.Opposition Senator Ronald Isidore is expected to question Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit on the country’s current debt and by what amounts has the consumer price of fuel and electricity dropped within the last two years under the Petro Caribe arrangement.Senator Ezekiel will also question the Agriculture Minister Mathew Walter regarding the high cost of imputs and whether the Ministry of Agriculture will make budgetary arrangements to provide the necessary financial support to assist farmers in Dominica.Other questions range from the condition of the D’leau Gommier Wet Area Road, information regarding diplomatic appointments, information on Tarreau Bay access, the condition of Gutter Road in Marigot, details regarding disaster relief and assistance with regard to the west coast natural disaster.Meantime Boyd-Knight says she welcomes any move by the Opposition to return to Parliament as it would be a step in the right direction. The Opposition has accused the speaker of being bias; however she maintains that this is not the case.According to the Speaker, some members of the Opposition have made it difficult for the operations of the house.“There is one member on the Opposition side who would come in and refuse to bow to the chair. I contacted the person personally and spoke to them about it. That member told me if I want them to bow I must tell them where in the standing order it says they should bow,” she added. She added that certain members feel that they must display non productive or good feeling towards the chair but “I am representing the chair. The chair is not me. When they disrespect the chair, I don’t take it personally, it is a reflection on the person rather than on me,” she added.Parliament convenes from 10 o’clock.Dominica Vibes News Share 7 Views   no discussionslast_img read more
