2 May 2013South Africa’s democracy would not be sustainable or successful if the plight of the working class, employed and unemployed, was not sufficiently attended to, President Jacob Zuma said on Wednesday.Speaking at the main Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) Workers’ Day rally in Kimberly, Northern Cape, Zuma said that the African National Congress (ANC) had a strong bias towards the working class and poor.“The ANC bias towards the working class does not mean we have abdicated our responsibility as a liberation movement to mobilize the broadest strata of society for fundamental transformation.“It simply means we have correctly understood that our democracy will not be stable, sustainable and successful if the plight of the working class, employed or unemployed, is not sufficiently attended to,” Zuma said.Workers’ rights such as the right to fair labour practices and the right to form and join trade unions were enshrined in the Constitution. “These are very important rights which must not be taken for granted.”Zuma said a tendency to divide workers or undermine collective bargaining among others should be guarded against.“Unity within Cosatu is paramount. We need a united Cosatu that is able to devote its attention to promoting the rights of workers. Thus we urge the labour movement to work seriously at uniting the federation and to resolve whatever differences there may exist.”Workers were the creators of the country’s wealth and they had to get an equitable share in the wealth, Zuma said, adding that attention needed to be paid to the plight of mineworkers and farm workers.“As we focus on miners and farm workers, we also remember those workers who tragically lost their lives in Marikana in the North West and related violent incidents. We have to draw lessons from Marikana.”The National Development Plan (NDP) was the country’s socio-development blueprint for the next 20 years, Zuma said.“We reiterate that those who have views about the NDP should feel free to raise them in the spirit of the democratic culture within the movement … Views cannot be suppressed. However, work is continuing to implement the NDP.”At government level, the Department of Performance Monitoring and Evaluation has already begun developing a draft medium-term strategic framework for 2014-2019, as the first five-year building block of the NDP.The intention is to submit the first draft of the 2014-2019 NDP-aligned framework to the 2013 July Cabinet lekgotla. This can then be refined so that it can be submitted to the new Cabinet for approval as soon as possible after the 2014 elections. This will enable departments to include the new targets in their individual five-year strategic plans, which they will be starting to work on later this year and in early 2014.Source: SAnews.gov.za
Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Tags:#Apple#Apple Watch#battery#smartwatch#wearable Related Posts Apple might be looking for a new way to improve the Watch 2 battery life, if a patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this month is to be believed. The patent shows two possible designs for a wearable battery charger, one that is embedded into the wristband and another that sits underneath the chassis. The charger would provide Watch 2 users with a few hours extra, before it needs to be recharged.See Also: Apple confirms rumored interest in self-driving cars in letter to regulatorsFor the second design, which sits underneath the chassis, the company plans to use ‘heat-dissipating’ circuitry to ensure the battery doesn’t burn users.Promoted versus performance on battery lifeApple promotes 18 hours of battery life for the Watch 2, but users will know the results vary wildly depending on how much time you spend on the watch. Most reviewers of the Watch 2 said it managed 6-7 hours of screen-on time with heavy usage. The wearable charger looks to be a way for Apple to appeal to power users, while not making the Watch 2 (or Watch 3) any thicker. The Watch 2 is already thicker than the original smartwatch.Consumers have referenced the poor battery life over the two years as one of the main reasons they stopped using the smartwatch. Apple is looking to address these complaints with the next Watch series, set to come out sometime this year.Even with the patent published, it is still way too early to say if the iPhone maker intends to launch a wearable charger for the Watch. Apple publishes hundreds of patents every year, and many end up unused. Follow the Puck David Curry Internet of Things Makes it Easier to Steal You… How Myia Health’s Partnership with Mercy Virtua…

BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry has questioned the Yo-Yo test which has become a pre-requisite for selection in Team India.Recently, Mohammaed Shami was dropped for the one-off Test against Afghanistan while Ambati Rayudu, who had a dream IPL season with Chennai Super Kings, lost his place after failing the Yo-Yo test.Sanju Samson was also left out of the India A squad for the tour of England after failing the test.Chaudhry has written a letter to the Committee of Administrators (COA) asking for a proper explanation. The Print, which has a copy of the letter and it states: “At which forum was the decision taken to have a minimum score on the Yo-Yo test as a prerequisite for selection in a BCCI-selected team? Who all were present in the meeting that decided this?”Most importantly, once this decision was taken, to whom was the same communicated? Was it communicated to all first-class players in India? Was it communicated to all List A players in India? Was it communicated to all state cricket associations to communicate to their players?”WHAT IS THE YO-YO TEST?The test involves players running between two cones set 20 metres apart on the field. One shuttle includes a process where the player starts on a beep and needs to reach the cone at the other end before the second beep goes off. He is then required to turn back and return to the first cone before the third beep. There are different speed levels for these shuttles. Players start at speed level 5 (one shuttle) before moving to speed level 9 (also one shuttle). Speed level 11 (two shuttles), speed level 12 (three shuttles) and speed level 14 (four shuttles) follow. From speed level 14, there are eight shuttles per level.advertisementBIZARRE POLICY?Former India player Sandeep Patil recently slammed the team’s policies towards the Yo-Yo tests.”Look, I am not against fitness being a criteria,” Patil told Mid-day. “…But I find it very absurd that a player is dropped for failing the Yo Yo test after he has been picked in the squad. In this way, you are disturbing the balance of the team; you are playing with the career of a cricketer.”Patil, a former selector, found it bizarre that the eventual selection now lies in the hands of the trainer.BCCI NOT HAPPYLast week, Amitabh Chaudhry, the BCCI Acting Secretary said the Indian team management needed to follow proper procedure for the Yo-Yo tests if they were deemed so critical.”I would only like to go as far as saying that if the Yo-Yo tests were such an integral part then they should have been done through a proper procedure. I think reservations are based on the fact that procedures have not been followed,” he said.TEAM INDIA ADAMANTHowever, India coach Ravi Shastri said the Yo-Yo test was here to stay and players had to pass the test to stay in contention.”I think it’s a combination of both ability and fitness. If you are fit, you can enhance that ability. That is one thing that has been emphasized on while designing the Yo-Yo fitness test. And it is here to stay. Whoever thinks it’s a one off thing, he is sadly mistaken and that person can take a walk,” Shastri said.”The philosophy is simple. You pass the test, you play. You don’t, you sit. So this is not going to go anywhere. The captain leads from the front, the selectors the management are on the same page. And the boys have responded extremely well.”

Russell Running Bird and Delcy Healy.Since the peace camp started, member Shauna Fox says that there is a sense of pride in the community.“They are standing up to the racism now, instead of just letting it go like it was normalized behaviour,” she said. “We aren’t only a place to report, we have sharing circles so it is restorative, healing.”
